Kanga Cup 2014

This year our club took down a group of young boys to represent Ramsgate RSL at the Kanga Cup 2014. This group of boys have been training since last September for this event.

Opening Ceremony
Our boy walked into the Slam Dunk arena at the AIS on Sunday looking great in their club jackets. All our boys were on their best behaviour, having a chat and joke with teams from around the country. We sat in the arena where the Australian, Korean and New Zealand national anthems where played. The Haka and dragon dance was just totally amazing. It was a really great experience for all.

Day 1 – Ramsgate RSL 1-3 East Bayern
Our boys played Easy Bayern in a game which they dominated for large portions of the game. Ufortunately, a few lapses of concentration led to 3 goals to East Bayern. The turning point of our tournament as well as our season came when one of the Easts players hand balled in the area. Our captain Matthew grabbed the ball, stepped up and scored our first goal of the tournament.

Day 2 – Woden Valley 0–7 Ramsgate RSL
What a game! Dion, Harry, Mike and Nicolas scoring seven goals between them. This was the best game of football I have seen our boys play all year. Our passing game and vision throughout the game was second to none. I could feel something special was about to happen.

Day 3 – Brindabella Blues 1–2 Ramsgate RSL
In a game where we struggled to find goals, I was more than happy with the effort and style of play we produced. The confidence our boys were playing with seemed to be growing and it was not long before Harry, with his magic touch, scored two great goals. The boys were playing with a confidence and skill which Tony and myself have been coaching for since September 2013.

Day 4 – Semi Final – Belnorth Devils 0–1 Ramsgate RSL
This was by far the best team we faced in the tournament. Both teams held great possession of the ball in the most evenly matched up game I had seen played all week. Thanks to Harry’s golden boots, we went up 1 nil and managed to defend the one goal lead. A very emotional and physical game.

Presentation night
All the boys received a Kanga Cup shirt and few words of praise. As a coach, parent and friend, it is difficult to find the balance between being hard on the boys to get the best out of them and singing their praise. On this occasion, I felt it most appropriate for not only the boys to be praised but all the family and friends who spent the week together.

Day 5 – Grand Final – Ramsgate RSL 0–1 Easts Bayern
On the morning of the big game, our boys looked a little flat and exhausted from the week as well as the semi final match played a day earlier. For the opening stanza of the game, we dominated, but unfortunately we didn’t get any reward for the hard work. As the wind picked up, Easts started to dominated the game. To our boys credit, we continued to counter attack all game, which had East extremely worried. Marcus was simply unbeatable in goals. This was the best display of goal keeping I have ever seen by a young goal keeper.

Unfortunately, as a result of foul play we lost Giuseppe in defence as a result of a bad challenge, Marcus in goals as a result of him having his wrist kicked and Joseph in what I believe to be one of the worst incidents which could happen on a football field. As a result East’s Bayern scored a goal which was enough for them to win the U11’s Kanga Cup Shield.

Special mentions need to made to young Nicolas, who went into left back for Giuseppe and then goal keeper for Marcus. This group of boys have shown that they are truly a team, doing what they have to for the team. Also an extra special thank you to Nathan for talking team tactics, Ali, Tony, Paul, Leo, Dave, Mike Senior, Con all worked as support staff for the boys and for me over the week. Also a special thanks to young Dimitri which would help warm the goal keepers up before the game. Carlos travelled down to Canberra with another team, yet found time to prepare Marcus before the finals in goal. A very big thank you Carlos from our team (Carlos is the club's very own goal keeper coach). Also, I would like to thank all the mums who came down: Cecilia – organising all the sight seeing tours of Canberra and looking after some of the younger kids; Sandra – accommodation; Renee – greatest manager you could have; Maria and Cathy – for their support with all the kids. We had both Dion and Matthew's grandparents come down and support the team. This is the kind of support which helps our boys lift in the big games. We also travelled with a large contingent of brothers and sisters. I know we were the best supported team in the tournament.

I need to give an extra special thank you from all our boys and parents to Tony Di Gregorio. Tony comes down every Tuesday and Thursday night to help train the boys as well as attending as many Saturday games as possible. I do not believe that we would be achieving the level of football our boys play without Tony's involvement and input.

To all the BOYS, I’m very very proud of you all. I’m honoured to be your coach. To all the PARENTS, thank you for trusting me to be your son’s coach. To all the FRIENDS which come down each week, thank you for your support.

This is not the end, but the beginning of a growing GREAT football club.

Socceroo's Fan Day for our U6's

Wow, what a day! All players showed up on time for the game at Poultan Park at 0930 hrs! Our new player Lachlan turned out to be an excellent choice! Our team won 5-2 with a fantastic (own) goal by Lachlan.

After the game we made our way to Jubilee Oval to meet the Socceroos. When we arrived, they were training and shooting at goals. It was very impressive.

When the Socceroos had a break, Salvatore from the Mini Roos asked our team to come on the field and play against another U6 team from a different club. After their friendly game, they met the Kangaroos Mascot and went over to meet the Socceroos in person. The guys were very busy but had enough time to pose with all their fans one on one.

Unfortunately, we did not get the chance to play with the socceroos, to the relief of some, as they pointed out the Socceroos would be advantaged because they are grown ups. The boys (and mum’s and dad’s) had a ball and wished them well for tonight’s game against South Africa. Thank you very much for choosing our little team.

As always we are very proud of them!

For junior players, membership of one parent is appreciated. Membership is only $8.80 per year. Application forms will be available at registration.
